Birth/Marriage/Death Certificates

Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates offer a wealth of information, and are gateways to our past. They offer a glimpse into the lives of our ancestors and insights into the societies they lived.

A Birth Certificate reveals not only the child’s birth date and place but also the parents names. This offers immediate clues to trace ancestral lines further back. Perhaps even more intriguingly, the father’s occupation on a birth certificate paints a picture of the family’s social standing and economic circumstances.

Marriage Certificates are another treasure trove of information. They can provide the full names of the bride and groom, their ages, marital statuses, occupations and places of residence. Their fathers names and occupation can also be available and the witnesses listed can give insights into family connections and friendships.

Finally, death certificates offer a poignant glimpse into the end of a life. Beyond the date and place of death, these documents record the deceased’s age, occupation, and cause of death. Learning the cause of death can shed light on historical disease trends, occupational hazards, and even social conditions. The informant listed on the certificate (usually a family member) provides another connection to the past and potential avenues for further research.

You can order BMD Certificates direct from the General Register Office. Digital Images are available for Birth 1837 – 1923 and Deaths 1837 – 1957 for £3.00 each. For PDF copies the charge is £8.00, and a full certificate is £12.50, both of these are sent by post. The information provided on all options is the same.
