(1916 – 1934)
I have chosen to do a small feature of Dora, as among the items I have acquired there was a pink silk ribbon with the Dora’s funeral details on and was very sad to see that she had died at the age of 17. (Now at the time I had only just started on my genealogy journey and didn’t realise how many babies and children died at such young ages.)Dora Annie Stirzaker was the daughter of William Stirzaker (1888-1954) and Hannah Metcalfe (1884-1954), and was born on 18 July 1916 at 13 Jane Grove, Liverpool, Lancashire.

On the 1921 Census she was still living at the same address along with her parents, William and Hannah, her brother Dennis William, and her sister Elizabeth Ellen. Apart from this information I don’t know much more about Dora’s life. Her father was a motor driver for J Bibby & Sons Ltd, and I was told by an aunt that he also worked for Tate & Lyle, so I don’t think they were a wealthy family but also not a poor one.Dora died at the family home, 144 Harrowby Street, Liverpool, on 25 April 1934. Her cause of death was registered as Uraemic convulsions / Chronic nephritis (kidney disease).

Her funeral took place on 28 April 1934 at the Primitive Methodist Church, Prince’s Avenue, followed by her burial at Allerton Cemetery.
I have often wondered what Dora looked like and what kind of person she was. Well, I was absolutely amazed when I recently found a photo of her on Ancestry (which I have been allowed to share – thank you thompsonmjohn597957 ) and she looks such a lovely carefree young lady who I would have loved to have known.
